Australia enacted its first federal law providing broad protection against racial discrimination. It addressed areas including employment, housing and access to services, drawing on the international racial-discrimination convention. The law provided a means of challenging unequal treatment. Most provisions commenced later than the assent date, and legal protection did not by itself settle Indigenous land claims.
