The Boldt decision affirms treaty fishing rights

← Back to Dashboard
📅 12 February 1974 📍 United States

A federal court affirmed the treaty rights of participating Washington tribes to a share of the harvestable fish catch, generally up to half. The judgment followed years of Indigenous resistance to restrictions on fishing. It recognized that treaties imposed continuing obligations and strengthened tribal authority over resources central to livelihoods, community life and cultural continuity.
