The Portuguese dictatorship falls amid prolonged colonial wars

← Back to Dashboard
📅 25 April 1974 📍 Portugal

The Armed Forces Movement overthrew Portugal's dictatorship. Prolonged wars against African liberation movements had helped undermine the regime. The overthrow opened the way to negotiations and the dismantling of Portugal's African empire. African resistance was therefore part of the conditions for change in the colonial power itself, rather than decolonization being simply a gift from Lisbon.
