Cape Verde gains independence from Portugal

← Back to Dashboard
📅 5 July 1975 📍 Cape Verde

Cape Verde became independent after the PAIGC's campaign linking its liberation with that of Guinea-Bissau. The transfer ended Portuguese colonial sovereignty over the islands. It represented a victory for a movement that connected national self-determination with the rejection of colonial hierarchies, while the new state faced the material constraints inherited from colonial rule.
