Suriname becomes an independent republic

← Terug naar het dashboard
📅 25 November 1975 📍 Suriname

Suriname left the Kingdom of the Netherlands and became a sovereign republic. The transfer followed nationalist campaigning and negotiations, with Henck Arron as prime minister and Johan Ferrier as president. Independence ended Dutch sovereignty. From a decolonial perspective, it opened questions about transforming the economic and cultural institutions inherited from plantation colonialism, beyond the constitutional transfer itself.
