Ngāti Whātua begin the occupation of Bastion Point

← Back to Dashboard
📅 5 January 1977 📍 New Zealand

The Ōrākei Māori Action Committee began occupying Takaparawhau, also known as Bastion Point, to resist a proposed housing development on ancestral land. Led by Joe Hawke, the occupiers connected the immediate development dispute with the history of Ngāti Whātua dispossession. Living collectively on the land asserted Indigenous authority against state decisions that treated it as property available for redevelopment.
