A state of emergency confronts the Black Power movement

← Back to Dashboard
📅 21 April 1970 📍 Trinidad and Tobago

The government declared a state of emergency and detained leaders after weeks of demonstrations. The movement had sought Black empowerment, economic change and solidarity between African and Indian communities. Repression revealed a conflict within an independent state over how far decolonization should extend into property, employment and governing institutions. Protesters' demands went beyond the replacement of a colonial flag.
