The Arar inquiry exposes failures in national-security information sharing

Dennis O’Connor released the factual findings of the inquiry into Maher Arar. The investigation found no evidence that Arar had committed an offence or posed a security threat and examined the damaging transmission of inaccurate information by Canadian officials. Public scrutiny challenged the treatment of a Muslim citizen as presumptively suspect. This was the report stage of the accountability struggle; the government’s formal apology followed in January 2007.
