Police forcibly evacuate the Saint-Bernard occupation

← Back to Dashboard
📅 23 August 1996 📍 France

Police entered Saint-Bernard church in Paris and removed the undocumented migrants occupying it. Images of the operation made the conflict over regularization widely visible. The eviction did not end the movement: Saint-Bernard became a symbol of migrant self-organization and the contest over who could claim rights and belonging in France.
