South Africa's Constitutional Assembly adopted a new constitutional text after a participatory drafting process. Its rights framework sought to replace the legal architecture of apartheid with equality and democratic government. This was the first adoption: Constitutional Court review, amendments and final signing followed, so the date is not the Constitution's commencement date.
