The Gleneagles Agreement strengthens the apartheid sports boycott

Commonwealth leaders agreed to withhold support for sporting contacts with South Africa and to take practical steps to discourage them. The agreement strengthened the international campaign against apartheid by challenging the legitimacy that normal sporting relations conferred on a racial state. It created a shared political commitment, although implementation still depended on governments, sporting bodies and continuing public pressure.
