Thousands of opponents mobilized against the National Front's march through southeast London. Local residents, Black communities and antifascist activists challenged the far right's attempt to claim public space and intimidate migrants. Confrontations with marchers and police became known as the Battle of Lewisham. The mobilization demonstrated collective community resistance to organized racism, while provoking debate about policing and protest.
