Residents and activists halted construction of a highway patrol facility on land promised for a community park in San Diego. They occupied and began transforming the site. Their campaign asserted neighbourhood control against planning decisions that had fragmented Barrio Logan. Chicano Park became a place for collective memory, cultural expression and resistance to the marginalization of Mexican American communities.
