Kwame Nkrumah formed the Convention People’s Party in the Gold Coast. Its demand for immediate self-government and mass organizing widened the struggle beyond negotiations among established political elites. Workers and other supporters helped turn opposition to colonial political subordination into a movement seeking control of the institutions that determined their collective future.
