The ANC called a day of mourning and a general strike against repression and the Suppression of Communism Act. Workers’ absence and public protest connected political rights to collective organizing. The action resisted the state’s power to criminalize opposition to racial rule. This protest preceded the separate Defiance Campaign launched in June 1952.
