The predominantly Indigenous Zapatista Army of National Liberation began an uprising in Chiapas and issued its First Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle. Its demands included land, housing, health, education, democracy and justice. The rebellion challenged the marginalization of Indigenous communities and connected political voice with the material conditions of collective survival.
