Uluru and Kata Tjuta are handed back to Aṉangu

← Back to Dashboard
📅 26 October 1985 📍 Australia

Title deeds to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park were returned to Aṉangu Traditional Owners after a long campaign. The handback recognized their relationship to Country and provided for joint management through a lease arrangement. It challenged the assumption that the state alone could determine the meaning and use of Indigenous landscapes, while leaving practical questions of authority within negotiated institutional arrangements.
