Matthew Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkonto and Sicelo Mhlauli were intercepted while returning from Port Elizabeth and murdered by security police. Their organizing had helped build community resistance in the Eastern Cape. The killings targeted the people sustaining local democratic structures. The subsequent struggle for truth and accountability made the repression of grassroots organization a central part of the historical record.
