Police opened fire on people travelling from Langa township towards a funeral near Uitenhage, killing numerous participants. The shooting occurred on the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre and became known as the Langa massacre. It intensified opposition to apartheid policing and demonstrated how funerals and mourning had become sites of political mobilization, surveillance and state repression.
