The Constitution Act, 1982 came into force with section 35 recognizing and affirming existing Aboriginal and treaty rights. It identified First Nations, Inuit and Mรฉtis within the constitutional category of Aboriginal peoples. This gave collective rights constitutional protection within the Canadian state. The provision did not settle every land claim or fully define the scope of Indigenous self-government.
