A fire at a birthday party in New Cross led to the deaths of thirteen young Black people. In a climate of racist attacks, families and supporters feared racist violence and condemned the response of authorities and major media. The cause was not conclusively established. Community organizing turned grief and perceived neglect into a national campaign for recognition and justice.
