The Brixton uprising begins amid conflict over policing

Confrontations between young people and police began in Brixton and escalated over the following days. Intensive stop-and-search policing operated in a community already experiencing discrimination and economic exclusion. Described variously as riots or an uprising, the events prompted the Scarman inquiry. They placed the relationship between racialized communities and state institutions at the centre of national debate.
