Zimbabwe attained internationally recognized independence following liberation war, negotiations and elections. The transition ended the system of white-minority political rule defended by the Rhodesian state. Liberation movements and their supporters had challenged both colonial sovereignty and racial privilege. Independence changed governing authority, but inherited inequalities in land ownership and wealth remained central questions for substantive decolonization.
