The apartheid government banned Black Consciousness organizations and suppressed newspapers including The World and Weekend World. Detentions and restrictions targeted activists and journalists following Biko's death. The crackdown attacked both organizational capacity and the circulation of information. It shows how racial domination depended on controlling public knowledge as well as policing bodies, and why independent media formed part of liberation struggles.
