Montgomery residents return to desegregated buses

Black residents resumed bus travel after the boycott ended the previous day following receipt of the desegregation mandate. Sustained community organization, alternative transport and litigation had forced a change in public transport rules. Racist harassment continued, showing that this institutional victory required protection and further struggle.
