Alexandra residents boycott buses over a fare increase

← Back to Dashboard
📅 7 January 1957 📍 South Africa

Residents began refusing PUTCO buses after a one-penny fare increase. Many walked long distances to work, and the boycott spread to other communities. Collective withdrawal challenged transport costs within an apartheid economy that separated workers’ homes from employment and kept African wages low. Local organizing sustained the campaign beyond an initial protest.
