Ghana became independent as Britain relinquished control of the territories forming the new state. Years of nationalist organization and mass pressure had challenged colonial political authority. Sovereignty was a major institutional victory, providing a base for African solidarity while leaving the transformation of inherited economic relationships as a continuing task.
