The Netherlands transferred sovereignty following years of Indonesian resistance and negotiations. The transfer recognized a political independence that Indonesians had proclaimed in 1945 and defended against renewed colonial intervention. This challenged imperial claims to govern another people. The settlement did not automatically remove inherited economic inequalities, and the dispute over western New Guinea remained unresolved.
