Haiti’s constitution permanently rejects slavery

Haiti adopted a constitution prohibiting slavery and naming its citizens Black. The declaration challenged colonial color divisions and asserted dignity after independence. This political rejection of racial hierarchy did not remove every inequality within the new state.
