Chile decrees the abolition of slavery

← Back to Dashboard
📅 24 July 1823 📍 Chile

Chile’s government issued an abolition decree, ending legal slavery after earlier gradual measures. The legal outcome must be read alongside enslaved people’s efforts to gain freedom. A subsequent decree limited practical application, and abolition did not itself erase social or racial inequalities.
