Muslim workers’ headscarf cases reach a major EU ruling

← Back to Dashboard
📅 15 July 2021 📍 Germany

The EU Court of Justice ruled on employment disputes involving two Muslim women in Germany who wore headscarves. It held that restrictions on visible religious signs might be justified by an employer’s genuine need, subject to proportionality and relevant national protections. The litigation exposed barriers facing Muslim women at work; the ruling did not authorize every employer to impose an unrestricted headscarf ban.
