Amnesty International published research on repression in Xinjiang and called for the release of people arbitrarily detained there. Its campaign highlighted individual cases among Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic groups, bringing survivors’ and families’ experiences to international audiences. Amnesty assessed the repression as crimes against humanity; this was its research conclusion, rather than a criminal-court judgment.
