The Saramaka judgment protects collective territory and participation

The Inter-American Court recognized the Saramaka people's collective property rights and ordered Suriname to take protective measures, including territorial demarcation and legal recognition. It addressed participation and safeguards concerning development projects. The ruling challenged a framework in which the state could treat Maroon territory primarily as a resource concession area.
