The General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples after decades of advocacy and negotiation. It articulated collective rights, including self-determination, culture and relationships to lands and resources. The declaration supplied international standards; adoption did not automatically implement them in every country or convert the text into a treaty.
