The United Democratic Front was launched at Rocklands in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. It brought together organizations opposing apartheid's constitutional reforms and racial divisions. Community associations, religious groups and other affiliates helped connect local struggles with the demand for a united democratic South Africa. The launch strengthened a broad movement capable of coordinating resistance across the social institutions of apartheid.
