The Black Student Union and Third World Liberation Front began a strike over admissions, staffing and a curriculum that marginalized their communities. Students demanded authority over how their histories were taught. The campaign challenged the university as an institution of knowledge production and helped secure the establishment of a College of Ethnic Studies in 1969.
