France recognized Morocco’s independence after sustained nationalist resistance and negotiations. This ended the French protectorate, challenging imperial authority over Moroccan government. It was one stage in dismantling colonial territorial control: arrangements involving Spanish-controlled areas and Tangier followed separately. Political recognition left continuing questions about economic dependence and social inequality.
