Representatives of Asian and African countries opened the Bandung Conference in Indonesia. The gathering asserted their capacity to discuss international affairs and cooperation on their own terms. It linked sovereignty with opposition to racial discrimination and colonialism, creating a forum through which governments could support the liberation struggles of peoples still under colonial rule.
