Students and other protesters demanded recognition of Bangla in what was then East Pakistan. Police killed demonstrators during the language movement. This was a conflict within a postcolonial state, rather than direct European rule. It illustrates the continuing struggle over cultural authority when institutions subordinate a community’s language and restrict its ability to participate on equal terms.
