Burma achieved independence after nationalist organizing and negotiations over British withdrawal. The creation of a sovereign state ended formal imperial control over its government. In an institutional reading of racism, this challenged the political subordination of colonized peoples. Independence did not by itself resolve inequalities or establish agreement among the country’s diverse communities.
