African mineworkers strike for higher wages

← Back to Dashboard
📅 12 August 1946 📍 South Africa

African mineworkers on the Witwatersrand struck for a minimum wage of ten shillings a day and better working conditions. Police repression helped break the strike. Their collective withdrawal of labour challenged the economic foundation of racial rule: mining profits depended on a workforce subjected to low wages and coercive controls.
