Irene Morgan’s case defeats state segregation on interstate buses

← Back to Dashboard
📅 3 June 1946 📍 United States

The Supreme Court overturned Irene Morgan’s conviction for refusing segregated seating on an interstate bus. The ruling addressed an unconstitutional burden on interstate commerce. Morgan’s resistance and legal support weakened one instrument of racial exclusion, but the decision did not immediately end transport segregation or prevent companies from imposing discriminatory practices.
