Chinese Canadians confront a new exclusion law

Canada’s Chinese Immigration Act sharply restricted Chinese entry and separated families. Chinese communities called the anniversary “Humiliation Day” instead of joining celebrations of Confederation. The response challenged a national identity constructed around exclusion of people who had helped build the country.
