President Vicente Guerrero abolished slavery in the republic. The decree helped dismantle an institution inherited from colonial rule. Guerrero’s African ancestry also challenges histories that erase Afro-Mexican political leadership; formal freedom still required struggles against unequal landholding and racial exclusion.
