Yazd protesters
Memorial gatherings for those killed in Tabriz developed into demonstrations against the Shah.
The repression of demonstrators produced another group of martyrs and sustained the escalating cycle of mourning.
Merchants, clerics and students helped organize closures and public gatherings beyond formal political parties.
The Yazd protests showed that opposition was not confined to Tehran and had acquired a genuinely national reach.
