Provincial cities drive the revolutionary movement

Troops and police used lethal force, creating new martyrs whose memory would mobilize other cities.

Tabriz demonstrated how Shi'a mourning traditions could connect dispersed communities into a nationwide revolutionary movement.

Memorial gatherings for those killed in Tabriz developed into demonstrations against the Shah.

The repression of demonstrators produced another group of martyrs and sustained the escalating cycle of mourning.

Merchants, clerics and students helped organize closures and public gatherings beyond formal political parties.

Forty-day memorials again became political demonstrations across Iran.

Security forces violated the home of Ayatollah Shariatmadari in Qom during the unrest, deepening clerical opposition.

The killing at a senior cleric's home was understood by supporters as proof that sacred and private spaces were no longer protected.

The assault weakened hopes that limited reform could contain the crisis and widened clerical resistance to the Shah.

The Shah removed the long-serving head of the security service as unrest undermined confidence in the regime.
