The ANC National Executive Committee issued its January 8 statement marking 114 years since the organisation’s founding. The 2026 address connected ANC history to the 50th anniversary of the 1976 student uprisings and honoured the young people whose actions renewed the liberation struggle. It also set organisational and electoral priorities for the year. The statement’s account of the past foregrounds the movement’s role while inviting scrutiny of how the organisation now addresses the inequalities that shaped the uprisings and remain in the present.
