The ANC convened its 5th National General Council at Birchwood in Ekurhuleni, bringing together more than 1,500 delegates and alliance partners. The council reviewed implementation of resolutions adopted at the 55th National Conference and considered new organisational and policy questions. Its theme called for renewal and for making the ANC a more effective instrument of the people. The NGC is a mid-term review forum rather than an elective conference, so it could assess the leadership’s record without choosing a new national leadership.
