The Presidency formally proclaimed 29 May 2024 as the date for national and provincial elections after consultation with the Independent Electoral Commission. The election would be the first national contest in which independent candidates could stand under amended electoral law. The ANC entered the contest as the governing party, but voters—many of whom had been denied political rights under colonial and apartheid rule—would decide its mandate through the ballot.
