The sixth national and provincial elections since the end of apartheid took place. The ANC campaigned under Ramaphosa’s leadership, while voters assessed its 25-year record in government and competing parties’ proposals. The election took place amid continuing racialised inequality, unemployment and public debate about corruption and state capture. The vote provided a democratic mechanism for citizens to renew or withdraw political support.
